The initiative “committed to the green” is one of the key instruments sponsored from the European Golf Federation and the Ecology Unit, with the contribution of the European Union, in order to minimize the environmental impact and the natural reserves consumption caused by the golf courses. The project “committed to the green” is a certification program, which aims to certify every course that has joined the project, for its environmental compatibility. The participation in the project is voluntary, and the scope is to continuously improve the relation between golf and the surrounding environment. In Europe, the program is coordinated and managed by the Ecology Unit of the European Golf Federation that has the mission to assign the certificate in collaboration with a group of professional experts, members of independent organizations. In order to guarantee the maximum objectiveness and reliability, the definition of the criteria of the environmental compatibility and the consignment of the certificate are subjected to an independent control. Is Arenas was one of the first golf courses in Italy that had joined the project.
The process for the implementation for the project is composed in five phases: 1. The programmatic declaration. Refers to a signed pledge in which the golf course administration confirms its willingness to reduce the environmental impact caused by the sport facilities. 2. Evaluation of environmental impact. During this phase the performance of each course is evaluated in order to create a data base that will be used to develop a program of ecological compliance. It is possible to ask for the presence of an external consultant to help with the process of evaluation. 3. Environmental compatibility program. With the help of an environmentalist a plan of ecological compatibility with the surrounding environment is designed. This plan foresees progress in the sections of safeguarding the natural habitat, management of water resources, waste treatment, maintenance of fairways and greens, energy savings, and finally training employees and alerting and informing the public. 4. Certification. After a maximum of three years an environmentalist will submit a report of achievements regarding environmental compliance. 5. Committed to Green Award. Reports will be presented to “The Committed to Green Foundation”, and every course that deserves it, will be awarded for the significant progress achieved in the eight categories for which has been committed. The participation in the project includes the completion of a questionnaire in order to record the environmental prerogative and the maintenance process of the course.
